Marvel has big plans for Thor after Avengers: Doomsday: Chris Hemsworth speaks!

Following the Russo brothers’ statements about Avengers: Doomsday, specifically about Doctor Doom and the return of Steve Rogers, superstar Chris Hemsworth also provided some interesting previews about his character, the God of Thunder Thor.

Specifically, Chris Hemsworth said that Thor could very well return after Avengers: Doomsday, and assured that Marvel has ‘unique’ plans for the character’s future: “I talked to Kevin Feige about it, and he said it’s great because the audience now expects a lot of twists and turns with the character,” Chris Hemsworth told the , explaining that the Russo brothers allowed him to “try different things” with Thor in both Endgame and Doomsday. “And whatever we do next, we have some ideas to do something pretty unique again and hopefully different than what we’ve done before.”

There are rumors of a fifth Thor movie following the release of 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, which received mixed reviews from both fans and critics. The film, directed by Taika Waititi, holds the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of any Thor film and was rather polarizing for its overly comedic tone, which didn’t sit well with the overly serious villain Gorr, played by Christian Bale. Taika Waititi himself subsequently withdrew his name from directing a potential fifth film, with Chris Hemsworth previously stating that Thor’s future would depend on “what happens in Avengers: Doomsday.”

Thor is one of the characters who has evolved the most in the MCU over the years, and Avengers: Doomsday, Avengers: Secret Wars, and a possible Thor 5 could continue this trend: Chris Hemsworth is one of the longest-running Avengers in the MCU, having joined the franchise in 2011, and it seems that his adventure will not end anytime soon.

The actor has revealed that he still has “a couple of opportunities” to play Thor beyond the next Avengers movie, although we already know that one of these is Avengers: Secret Wars. “It was a lot of fun,” he said. “And what I really liked was that, unlike many other characters, many of my fellow actors had to be pretty consistent over the years. For me, working with Taika Waititi on his films, compared to Kenneth Branagh and then the Russos, allowed me to create many different interpretations.”

Citing the comics as an example of how Thor has evolved and changed over the years, the Crime 101 star admitted that “you have to be careful” with the God of Thunder: “When we made ‘Ragnarok,’ there was a nice twist with Taika’s film. And it was a lot of fun. There was a huge appreciation for the change that film brought. And then with ‘Love And Thunder’, it was a bit like a Monty Python sketch, and we probably went a little too far, we made fun of ourselves a little too much, and at that point we faced some negative reaction. The audience was offended, but we were just trying to try something different and have fun.”

It remains to be seen what will happen to Thor: looking at the source material, there are countless possibilities and an endless number of acclaimed stories to draw inspiration from. Regardless of the creative direction, it seems that Thor 5 is definitely in the works, at least based on this latest update from Chris Hemsworth.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on December 18, while Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled for December 17, 2027. For more content, watch the Avengers: Doomsday trailer dedicated to Thor.
