The new horror film Obsession is rewriting all the rules of the box office, and now, in a surprising update, we learn that Curry Barker’s film has even managed to surpass The Mandalorian and Grogu, the new Star Wars film heading into its second weekend in theaters. That’s right, the Disney and Lucasfilm sci-fi blockbuster The Mandalorian and Grogu has been dethroned from the top spot at the U.S. box office… by an R-rated independent horror film with a budget of less than $1 million, estimated at around $750,000.
Curry Barker’s Obsession has proven to be a massive hit with audiences since its theatrical release on May 15, and as it heads into its third weekend, the film has reclaimed the top spot, previously held by the first Star Wars film since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker and, before that, by the Michael Jackson biopic, which Obsession had surpassed on its opening Monday. Yesterday, Obsession grossed $5.6 million (compared to $4.2 million for The Mandalorian & Grogu) and now, after 13 days in theaters, has reached a total of $73.5 million.
It is estimated that “The Mandalorian and Grogu” will gross around $40 million in its second weekend (which would represent a significant drop of 50%), but both films will face stiff competition from A24’s “Backrooms,” which is expected to gross between $40 and $45 million on its opening weekend: The Star Wars film is expected to hold onto the number two spot between Saturday and Sunday, but strong word-of-mouth among fans could propel it back to the top. We’ll know more in the coming hours.
