There’s less than a month to go before the release of the third season of House of the Dragon, and according to showrunner Ryan Condal, the new season will open with a memorable episode in true Game of Thrones style: the one dedicated to the highly anticipated and pivotal Battle of the Narrow Sea.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the House of the Dragon showrunner didn’t hold back when describing the Season 3 premiere, stating that, in terms of production, it is “probably the craziest TV episode ever made.” These words certainly bode well for the spectacle, in a narrative universe that has already brought events like the Battle of the Bastards, Hardhome, and The Long Night to the screen: these are words to get excited about!
After a second season shortened due to the 2023 writers’ strike, the third season of House of the Dragon will open with a battle that promises to be gripping from the very start of the series. “This time, the series will kick off at 96 miles per hour,” said Emma D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra Targaryen. “We’re finally seeing a war that has been building over the course of two seasons.” A sentiment shared by actor Ewan Mitchell, who plays Aemond: “It’s all-out war… It’s a surprise attack right from the start.”
As readers of the books already know, the Battle of the Narrow Sea is shaping up to be a crucial turning point in the civil war between Team Green and Team Black: it will be a no-holds-barred naval battle, which means “dragons, ships, and multiple theaters of conflict,” says Condal. The Battle is so central to the history of Westeros that Condal argues that “trying to tell this story without the Battle would be like trying to film The Lord of the Rings without the Battle of Helm’s Deep.”
Some potentially decisive moves toward ending the war are about to be made in the third season of House of the Dragon, as hinted at in the evocative trailer for House of the Dragon 3: first, Rhaenyra has set her sights on King’s Landing following her secret meeting with Alicent in Season 2, while Aemond and his monstrous dragon Vhagar have discovered that Damon is at Harenhaal.
It would seem that the situation favors Team Green after Rhaenyra’s dragon seeds bore fruit in Season 2, but everyone knows that the tide of war can turn in an instant in Westeros…
