Marvel fans are dreaming of Captain America 5… but they aren’t being very nice to Sam Wilson

We still don’t know exactly what these untitled films with reserved release dates will be, and in this regard, Marvel fans have been having fun imagining what a hypothetical Captain America 5 might look like: many are practically begging for a “true Sam Wilson story,” confirming that the previous chapter of the saga, Captain America: Brave New World, didn’t leave a great impression. “If Sam Wilson were to get another movie, what would you want to see in terms of plot and character, following the ‘reset’ when the three main universes merge? I’d really love to see him take on a role in trying to control and confront the new mutant population and the X-Men alongside the Avengers,” the Reddit thread began.

The “reset” mentioned refers to the much-anticipated (but unconfirmed) possibility that the MCU will undergo a sort of soft reboot, with a new narrative universe emerging after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars that will establish a world and a timeline in which the Avengers, Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and everyone else coexist in a single reality, just as they do in Marvel Comics.

As for what fans want most from a hypothetical Captain America 5, the top-voted answer is crystal clear: “A quality script and dialogue.” Other fans elaborate on this, hoping for a film that focuses more on telling an original Sam Wilson story, rather than revisiting plotlines abandoned by other films—such as the inclusion of Red Hulk and Leader, traditional enemies of the Hulk, and the involvement of Tiamat’s frozen shell from Eternals. One fan sums it up by saying: “A real Sam Wilson movie, not a Hulk sequel.”

Others are in favor of Sam picking up loose ends, but would prefer to see him involved in stories that specifically involve Captain America, such as the Power Broker storyline left unresolved in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” One user wrote: “I like the idea of Sam picking up all the loose ends from previous films, but not if that means his movies are simply direct sequels to a single film. If this movie had focused on ‘The loose ends from Eternals and those from The Incredible Hulk have come together to create something worse than only Captain America can handle,’ I would have been fine with that. But this felt more like… ‘We’re making a Hulk sequel without involving the Hulk…don’t worry, though, because he’ll be back in Spider-Man!’”

Others, however, would like to see a completely new direction for Sam, with some even suggesting an elaborate time jump into the future, set in Marvel’s 2099, or even the year 3000—the era of the original Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics: “Do something crazy. Captain America 3000. Have Sam make a crazy sacrifice in Doomsday, after giving the shield to Steve. In the post-credits scene, Sam wakes up as Steve in 2011, but in the distant future, the year 3000,” the fan imagines. “Sam teams up with the Guardians of the Galaxy from the future, a nod to the original comic book team, which had its own Captain America from the future. This would truly make Sam a man out of time.”

“I think Anthony Mackie could work well in that context and would give Marvel Studios a new era of Marvel mythology to explore,” the fan continues. “Old Man Logan, Hawkeye, characters from 2099, etc. This could set the stage for using that era in future mutant stories as well, such as with Apocalypse. Maybe even a crossover with Spider-Man 2099 if relations with Sony don’t deteriorate.”

We’ll see what happens when Sam Wilson returns as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday, coming out this December, and then again in Avengers: Secret Wars, coming in December 2027.
