DCU, James Gunn takes stock of denials and confirmations: Batman, Superman, and more

DC Studios co-CEO and director James Gunn has expressed his opinion on several recent rumors circulating around the DCU, including the alleged title change of Man of Tomorrow, plans for Batman, and claims that Paradise Lost has been shelved.

Gunn began by denying rumors that the film’s title would be changed to Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Explaining that Variety had made a “mistake,” the director said, “I try to avoid colons,” which probably explains why Superman: Legacy became Superman in the works and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow became Supergirl. He also reminded fans that Man of Tomorrow “is not just a Superman movie,” referring to the fact that Lex Luthor will co-star in the sequel.

Gunn also denied that he wants to wait for The Batman 3 to be released before proceeding with Batman: The Brave and the Bold, responding to rumors that he is trying to speed up production of the third installment of Matt Reeves’ saga in order to introduce the Caped Crusader to the DCU. “I’m not speeding up anything except our scripts, which are currently being prepared to go into production,” he said. The co-CEO of DC Studios also called rumors that he doesn’t want two Batmen on screen at the same time “incorrect,” reiterating that we will see Batman: The Brave and the Bold before the finale of Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s The Batman trilogy.

When asked about the TV series Paradise Lost, a spin-off of Wonder Woman, which according to the latest rumors has been canceled, the frustrated director said, “Absolutely not. Oh my God, I log into Threads for the first time in weeks and find nothing but crazy misinformation one after another. What is going on?” Taking a break from denying rumors, Gunn finally said of Man of Tomorrow: “A couple of months in and I’ve already storyboarded almost the entire movie. All the real work is now, before we start production. The more work I do now, the less I’ll have to do during filming and post-production!”

As always, what Gunn doesn’t say is as interesting as what he does say: for example, the Superman director remained silent on rumors that Maxima would make her DCU debut in Man of Tomorrow. Furthermore, it should be remembered that James Gunn has often ‘lied’ in the face of various scoops, publicly discrediting them despite their accuracy: the most famous case remains that of the villain Ultraman, whom scooper My time to shine hello revealed to be a clone of Clark Kent: Gunn denied it, but the film revealed that the insider was right…

Written and directed by James Gunn, Man of Tomorrow stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. We recently learned that Lars Eidinger will play the film’s main villain, Brainiac, while rumors suggest that several other actors and characters will appear, including Aaron Pierre as John Stewart/Green Lantern, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, John Cena as Peacemaker…and even the new Wonder Woman, at least according to rumors (which James Gunn has not denied, so far).

Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters on July 9, 2027, distributed by Warner Bros.
