More than two months after the end of the first season of It: Welcome to Derry, there is still no news about a second season. Although virtually everyone imagines that Andy Muschietti’s three-season plan is still on track, the truth is that, officially, the renewal has not yet been announced. And the numbers would certainly justify more episodes. With an average of 20 million global viewers, the series is among HBO Max’s biggest premieres, alongside House of the Dragon and The Last of Us. Such a resounding success would be hard to ignore, right?
But then, no news in Derry?
The lack of news, however, is beginning to worry fans and the press — and it was one of the topics that came up in an extensive interview with HBO CEO Casey Bloys with Deadline. In the conversation, the executive made it clear that he also doesn’t know the reason. According to him, if the decision were up to him, the new season would already be underway. At the moment, however, the ball is more in Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s court.
“Let’s just say it’s not at a standstill by any means. Quite the contrary. It was a huge success for us. Andy and Barbara are working hard to find the right idea for the story they want to tell in the next season. I would love to be a part of it. One of the challenges is that there is no book to base it on, so it’s pure creation. They want to make sure they have a story that excites them. So it’s not on hold—they just need to find something that excites them creatively. We’ll be there when that happens.”
To refresh your memory: It: Welcome to Derry is a prequel to the film adaptation of It. The first season takes place in 1962, and the creators’ idea was to tell a story in reverse chronological order. Therefore, the expectation is that a second season will take place in 1935 and a possible third in 1908, closing the origin of It and its transformation into Pennywise.
