Bridgerton 4 broke with tradition for the Netflix series

The fourth season of Bridgerton ended leaving fans feeling both excited and surprised. After weeks of waiting for Part 2, the finale surprised everyone, not only with the series’ classic twists and turns, but also with an unprecedented choice that broke with the show’s established tradition. Viewers witnessed the return of Lady Whistledown, still voiced by the iconic Julie Andrews, and saw Violet make a painful decision to end her relationship with Marcus. But the real surprise came when Sophie and Benedict’s long-awaited wedding was not shown during the episode, but after the credits.

This detail marks a first for the series. Until now, no season had dared to move a key plot moment outside the main episode. The post-credits scene, reminiscent of the strategies adopted by film franchises such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, allowed the writers to give fans a more harmonious and relaxed ending without weighing down an episode already rich in events. The scene takes place at Benedict’s cottage, a location fans will remember from season one, and sees friends and family gathered to celebrate the wedding. Anthony Bridgerton, initially opposed due to social conventions that would forbid a nobleman from marrying a servant, ultimately shows his support and admits he is proud of his brother.

Sophie walks down the aisle accompanied by her faithful Alfie, and the moment is accompanied by the completion of Sophie’s portrait as a Silver Lady, a symbol of the love and perseverance that have characterized her story. It’s a reassuring ending that leaves fans with a smile on their faces, exactly as showrunner Jess Brownell intended, who said in an interview: “The wedding was too important not to show, but moving it to after the credits allowed us to end the season on a light note.”

The post-credit scene also has a broader meaning, offering a glimpse into the future of the series. With the first four Bridgerton siblings starring in their respective seasons, there are still four more to explore in the coming chapters. There are also small details that pique the curiosity of fans. In the finale, the characters comment on potential future marriages and reflect on love after loss, hinting that the next seasons will balance romance, social tension, and personal growth for the protagonists. In a way, the decision to postpone Sophie and Benedict’s wedding is also symbolic of the series itself: love can come at the right time, even if you have to wait a little longer.
