Made famous by the success of his cult shark horror movie released in 1999, Deep Blue Sea, director Renny Harlin is ready to return to this particular subgenre with his new film Deep Water, and its first trailer looks like a mix between Jaws and Snakes on a Plane.
The highly anticipated new film Deep Water, as you can see in the video in the article, has just released its first teaser trailer: the video opens with the pilots (Aaron Eckhart from The Dark Knight and Ben Kingsley, star of Wonder Man) preparing for their flight to Shanghai. But once airborne, the aircraft is hit by turbulence that causes it to crash into the open sea. Many passengers die on impact, but for the survivors, the real danger has only just begun and lurks underwater: the plane has crashed into the hunting grounds of a pack of hungry sharks, who are eager to take advantage of the situation.
Although the teaser doesn’t give us a good view of any of the sharks, the clip is full of interesting images, such as passengers being pulled out of the plane in Final Destination style, or the plane crashing into the ocean. At one point, we see a shot from the wrecked plane that resembles the gaping jaws of a shark: in short, shark movies have been generous to Renny Harlin, and the director has clearly put a lot of effort into this highly anticipated return to the genre.
The official synopsis reads: “A group of international passengers en route from Los Angeles to Shanghai are forced to make an emergency landing in shark-infested waters. Now they must work together in the hope of surviving the onslaught of sharks attracted to the wreckage.” In addition to Eckhart and Kingsley, the film also stars Molly Wright, Angus Sampson, Kelly Gale, and Li Wenhan.
As mentioned, Deep Water marks Renny Harlin’s return to the shark horror genre 27 years after Deep Blue Sea. The director of Cliffhanger recently directed the reboot trilogy of The Strangers starring Madelaine Petsch from Riverdale, but he will soon return to the high seas for another horror film set in the depths of the ocean: the author has also made a film about killer whales entitled Black Tides, starring Melissa Barrera, star of Scream 5 and 6, and John Travolta.
Deep Water will hit US theaters on May 1.
