The cast of Martin Scorsese‘s upcoming film welcomes none other than Mads Mikkelsen, one of the most recognizable faces in the film industry. He joins the already confirmed Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio to form a trio of the highest caliber.
What Happens at Night, the title of Scorsese’s future film, is inspired by Peter Cameron’s novel of the same name and will see DiCaprio and Lawrence play a couple who travel to a mysterious European hotel in the heart of winter. The two set off for the Old Continent with the aim of adopting a child from an orphanage. Along the way, the wife, who is diagnosed with cancer, meets a mysterious healer named Brother Emmanuel (Mads Mikkelsen). Patricia Clarkson also joins the cast, and more confirmations will follow soon.
Martin Scorsese will direct and produce, while Anna Marsh, Shana Eddy Grouf, and Aaron Ensweiler will oversee production as executive producers for StudioCanal, which currently holds the film rights to the literary work. Apple will also be involved, confirming its partnership with Scorsese that began in 2023 with Killers of the Flower Moon, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio. The film was a stratospheric success, with 10 Oscar nominations at the time and a global box office take of $158 million.
Mikkelsen recently appeared in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny for Disney, as well as Bryan Fuller’s dark fantasy Dust Bunny. In the past, we have enjoyed him in films such as 2006’s Casino Royale and 2020’s Another Round. Among his other works, we mention the Danish comedy The Last Viking, presented in Venice last year and acquired by Samuel Goldwyn Films for distribution in the United States.
