The Kagurabachi anime had several suitors: this is how Japan’s most powerful studios tried to secure Shonen Jump’s new gem

A few days ago, it was finally announced that Kagurabachi would be making its small-screen debut next year. After taking the world by storm practically from its very first episode, an adaptation was something that was bound to happen sooner or later. However, what we didn’t know until now is that quite a few studios tried to secure this new cash cow from Shonen Jump.

As reported by the Japanese website Toyo Keizai, when a project of this nature reaches the production committee, a sort of contest or competition ensues in which the studios vying to produce the series submit a short animated teaser to prove they deserve to secure the adaptation.

Among all the studios, Cygames Pictures (now Cypic) presented a pretty decent first teaser, but not only that—they also presented the studio’s vision for the future and how Kagurabachi could benefit enormously from this plan, which aims to ensure the sustainability and quality of the studio’s works in the medium and long term.

But there’s another point in its favor: Cypic is a relatively new studio that has already proven its exceptional quality with recent series like The Day Hikaru Died and Umamusume. On top of that, there’s something very important to consider: unlike studios such as MAPPA and BONES, the company isn’t swamped with productions, so it can focus entirely on the adaptation without having to prioritize other series.

Furthermore, the production committee also saw a lot of potential in the studio’s international plan, which was to premiere the first episode of the anime worldwide so that people from all corners of the globe could enjoy this first glimpse as it deserves—in a movie theater. Let’s hope this series does great and that we get to see a high-quality adaptation worthy of one of today’s most popular shonen series.
