Gen V Cancellation: The Future of the Main Characters in the Vought Universe

As the grand finale of The Boys draws ever closer, the on-demand streaming platform Prime Video has just announced the next steps for the superhero franchise based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and produced by showrunner Eric Kripke. In fact, the main series The Boys is apparently not the only live-action series in Prime Video’s superhero franchise to have come to an end: it has just been confirmed that the spin-off Gen V will not return for a third season, with Prime Video deciding to wrap up the young-adult saga.

The news, which comes six months after the end of the second season of the young-adult drama set at Godolkin University’s School of Crime Fighting, was nonetheless expected and does not come as a bolt from the blue: one of the actors from Gen V, Asa Germann, recently landed a recurring role in another streaming series, Paramount+’s Frisco King, casting a shadow over the future of The Boys spin-off.

But although Gen V and The Boys have wrapped up—with the main series set to reach its climax in its fifth and final season on May 20—the franchise will continue with the spin-off The Boys: Vought Rising, which is scheduled to debut in 2027. Furthermore, thanks to the integrated storytelling of the Vought Cinematic Universe, the characters from Gen V appear in the current fifth season of The Boys, which also incorporates characters and other elements from Vought Rising.

The first storyline was introduced in the season 2 finale of Gen V, where the superheroes were recruited by Annie January (Erin Moriarty) from The Boys to join the resistance against Homelander’s dictatorship—a central theme of the Emmy-winning series’ final chapter: ” “While we’d love to keep the party going for another season at Godolkin, we’re committed to continuing the stories of the Gen V characters in the fifth season of The Boys and in other upcoming VCU projects,” said VCU executive producers Eric Kripke and Evan Goldberg. “You’ll see them again.”

In addition to Vought Rising, a new spin-off titled The Boys: Mexico is also still in development. All series in the franchise are produced by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios with Kripke Enterprises, Original Film, and Point Grey Pictures.

Gen V got off to a flying start, securing a renewal for a second season halfway through its first. The series suffered a tragic loss when one of its lead actors, Chance Perdomo, died in a motorcycle accident while on his way to the set in March 2024. As a result, production on the second season was postponed. The second season starred Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau, Lizze Broadway as Emma Meyer, Maddie Phillips as Cate Dunlap, London Thor as Jordan Li, Derek Luh as Jordan Li, Germann as Sam Riordan, Sean Patrick Thomas as Polarity, and Hamish Linklater as Dean Cipher. Michele Fazekas served as showrunner and executive producer. Kripke, Seth Rogen, Goldberg, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Ken Levin, Jason Netter, Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson, Michaela Starr, Ori Marmur, Thomas Schnauz, Steve Boyum, and Brant Engelstein also served as executive producers.

The new series The Boys: Vought Rising stars Aya Cash and Jensen Ackles, who also serve as producers. Paul Grellong is the showrunner and executive producer. Kripke, Rogen, Goldberg, Weaver, Moritz, Shetty, Marmur, Levin, Netter, Ennis, Robertson, Starr, and Jim Barnes are executive producers.
