This week, the first official trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day was finally released, but in addition to offering a sneak peek at Tom Holland’s fourth standalone Spider-Man adventure in the MCU, the promotional video also dropped a major spoiler for Daredevil: Born Again 2.
As you may know, the second season of the TV series dedicated to Matt Murdock will premiere on March 25 on the on-demand streaming platform, and over the course of eight episodes released weekly, it will conclude well before the theatrical release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for July 31. Chronologically speaking, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is set before Spider-Man: Brand New Day in the MCU timeline, with The Punisher movie (coming in the next few months, also on Disney+) serving as an interlude.
Many fans are naturally wondering how and to what extent the three works (Daredevil, The Punisher, and Spider-Man) will be connected, especially since they share the setting of New York City and a “street-level” adventure vibe; now, with the release of the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we already have some clues.
As fans have pointed out on X, at one point in the trailer, the mayor of New York hands Spider-Man the keys to the city… however, the mayor isn’t Wilson Fisk! Kingpin is the current mayor of New York following the events of Daredevil: Born Again 1, and he’ll remain so in Daredevil: Born Again 2… but the Spider-Man trailer revealed that he will lose his position very soon. Incidentally, the new mayor—or whoever is acting in her stead by handing the keys to the city to Spider-Man—is Sheila Rivera: played once again by actress Zabryna Guevara, she is a supporting character in Daredevil: Resurrection who is part of Mayor Fisk’s staff in both the first and second seasons of the series.
Is it possible that Marvel Studios made such a mistake a week before the release of the new season of Daredevil? Having already watched the entire second season of the MCU series but unable to reveal anything, we’ll refrain from adding our own comments… but we’ll share the fans’ theories.
“How clever of them to include this detail in the trailer to build some hype for Daredevil next week,” someone wrote on X, while others believe Spider-Man can’t be set after the second season: “The thing is, we’ve never seen or heard who the mayor was before Fisk, so it could be set before Daredevil.” On Reddit, some fans agree with the flashback theory, even speculating that this scene looks like a “what I’ve been up to since then” montage planned for the beginning of the film, while others think that Fisk’s “assistant” simply replaced his boss.
Daredevil: Born Again 2 premieres March 25 on Disney+. Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives July 31. The Punisher is expected to debut between the series and the movie, also on Disney+, likely in June or early July.\
