The routine process of any blockbuster success in Hollywood involves, in a few steps, a certain anxiety for more. On the part of the studios, the idea is to expand an original property into a franchise and replicate the commercial phenomenon. For the audience, this enthusiasm boils down to, after becoming attached to characters and a new universe, everyone being infected by the desire for new stories. This is as common as explosions in Michael Bay movies. That’s how the gears work.
That’s why, shortly after K-Pop Demon Hunters became the most-watched movie in Netflix history, Ted Sarandos, the company’s CEO, confirmed that they now see the Sony Pictures-produced film as the platform’s golden goose. This premise takes on new contours now that the streaming service has just made official the production of the sequel to the Oscar-nominated 2026 animation.
K-Pop Demon Hunters 2 is confirmed by Netflix
After rumors of a series, a sequel, and even plans for a live-action production, Netflix made the first official announcement about the animated franchise: K-Pop Demon Hunters 2 is confirmed. According to the platform, the sequel “marks the first project under the exclusive, long-term agreement for animation scriptwriting and directing.”
Directors and screenwriters of the original feature film, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, are also back on board for the highly anticipated sequel to the biggest hit in the history of the streaming service. “As a Korean filmmaker, I am immensely proud that audiences want more of this Korean story and our Korean characters. There is so much more to this world we have built, and I am excited to show it to you. This is just the beginning,” said Maggie, highlighting the cultural significance of this story.
“These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We are excited to write the next chapter, challenge them, and see them evolve—and continue to push the boundaries of how music, animation, and storytelling can come together,” added Chris.
The production also follows the partnership established between Netflix and Sony. “Defending the bold creative visions of our filmmakers is at the heart of everything we do at Sony Pictures Animation. Maggie and Chris brought incredibly unique perspectives to this film, telling a story that audiences around the world embraced. We are excited to work with them to expand that vision in this next chapter,” said Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville, presidents of Sony Pictures Animation.
Hinting that there is more to come, Dan Lin, Head of Films at Netflix, anticipated that there is much more to come. “Maggie and Chris had the courage to take a bold creative step in telling a story that was deeply personal and, at the same time, broke cultural barriers. At Netflix, our goal is always to make someone’s favorite movie — and they did that by creating the most popular movie in Netflix history! There’s so much more story to tell, and we can’t wait to bring more HUNTR/X to fans everywhere.”
What will the story of K-Pop Demon Hunters 2 be?
In this statement, the directors did not give any details about the sequel’s storyline. However, Maggie did comment on what she would do if K-Pop Demon Hunters 2 were confirmed. “We prepared a lot for a possible backstory [for the sequel],” the filmmaker told the publication. “Obviously, there are a lot of unanswered questions and areas that aren’t explored, and we had to do that because there’s a limit to what you can tell in 85 minutes,” she said in an interview with Variety.
“This was Rumi’s story, and we have backstories for Zoey and Mira — some that we actually put in the film, but it [the project] just rejected them. It just wasn’t the movie for those stories,” she added.
There is still no release date for K-Pop Demon Hunters 2, but it is expected that the project will not be released anytime soon. Previous predictions highlighted that the film could arrive on streaming platforms in mid-2029, which is consistent with the production time for sophisticated animations such as this one. However, no official date or window has been revealed.
