The sixth episode of Invincible’s fourth season, in fact, features a misleading post-credit scene that scared everyone for a few seconds, before the collective sigh of relief was released simultaneously by viewers around the world.
In recent episodes, we learned that the incredibly formidable Viltrumite known as Conquest survived his first encounter with Invincible in Season 3, after being kept alive in stasis by Cecil Stedman following their brutal battle. The villain regained consciousness in a previous episode and returned for a second round with Mark Grayson in last week’s brutal and acclaimed episode “Give Us A Moment.” This time, however, Invincible definitively killed his enemy, strangling Conquest… or did he??
In the new episode of the series released this week, while Mark recovers from his injuries, Omni-Man decides to bury Conquest, marking the grave with three upright stones to symbolize the Viltrum Empire. At the end of the episode, after Mark, Oliver, Nolan, Allen, and their Coalition allies successfully repel an attack by Thragg and his forces, the post-credits scene takes us back to Conquest’s grave… with dramatic music building as the camera zooms closer and closer to the grave.
At this point, every viewer’s heart—we’re sure yours too!—skipped a beat: Is Conquest still alive? For a moment, it really seems so, but the post-credit scene ultimately turns out to be just a prank by the Invincible series…since, thankfully, nothing happens and Conquest doesn’t come back to life. The scene seems to have fooled quite a few viewers, who thought they were going to see Conquest emerge from the ground, punching his way back into the fray. Apparently, though, the villain is really dead this time.
“Invincible was hilarious, especially the post-credits scene—it reminded me of the comic, LOL,” commented one fan. “That stuff really made me think Conquest was back again,” agreed another viewer, while yet another added: “They totally tricked me—I was thinking, ‘No way, he really died in the comic—are they bringing him back to life?!’” Another fan: “To be honest, they tricked me—I thought, ‘He’s alive?!?!? That wasn’t in the comic!!!!!’” Another fan echoed: “For a second, I thought they were really bringing him back to life.”
But Conquest, voiced by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, is truly dead this time, killed in last week’s episode, strangled to death by Mark after a rather bloody and gruesome battle.
Remember that Invincible continues weekly, with a new episode every Wednesday on Prime Video…and now there are only two episodes left until the season finale!
