Tom Holland is ready to don the superhero suit: the debut of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth installment of the Sony-Marvel superhero saga, is just around the corner. And the new teaser trailer released in the last few hours immediately tells us that the stakes have never been higher. At the end of the previous film, titled No Way Home and released in 2021 (featuring “former Spider-Men” Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield), Peter Parker found himself facing the consequences of the multiverse’s collapse, going so far as to erase the memory of his identity, including from the minds of his closest loved ones, his beloved MJ (Zendaya) and his friend Ned (Jacob Batalon).
As we can see from the new teaser clip, the story takes place four years after Doctor Strange’s spell erased all memories of Peter Parker, but he returns to fight crime once again as Spider-Man. While investigating a series of crimes, however, he will uncover an even greater mystery, likely tied to the fate of the universe, but he will also have to face the challenges of his powers, which seem to be changing and “betraying” him.
Joining him are some familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, such as Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, and Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, but there will also be—though they haven’t appeared here yet—new additions like Marvin Jones III playing the villain Tombstone, or Sadie Sink, who, following the success of Stranger Things, has been cast in the MCU in a role that remains a mystery (many believe it to be Jean Grey, an incarnation of the Phoenix, or Hope Summers, the daughter of Jean and Cyclops). In some scenes, we catch a glimpse of the warriors of the Hand, a sect already introduced in the old Netflix-Marvel series.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously helmed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to be released on July 29. This film will play a rather significant role in the fate of the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe: not only will it relaunch the Spider-Man character with a true sense of rebirth following the apparent conclusion of the previous trilogy, but it will also definitively set the stage for the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, coming this December.
