The 2026 Academy Awards ceremony brought this year’s award season to a close, with Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another triumphing as Best Picture, Michael B. Jordan winning Best Actor, and “Golden” making history as the first K-pop song to win an Oscar for Best Original Song.
But beyond the positive results and triumphs, as is often the case, it’s time to take stock and consider who emerged from the 2026 Oscars night defeated or with results falling short of expectations and predictions. Such is the case with Marty Supreme, who arrived at the awards ceremony with nine nominations, including those in the major categories, and left defeated and empty-handed. A defeat that is felt most keenly by Timothée Chalamet, considered the favorite for Best Actor despite some ill-advised statements made shortly before the awards ceremony.
Although it is not a true defeat in light of the four awards won, the results for Sinners also fell short of expectations. The film arrived at the Oscars as a favorite, with a record 16 nominations, and many believed it would win the major awards, including Best Picture. Instead, Ryan Coogler’s film became the movie with the most nominations ever to fail to take home the most coveted statuette. They certainly weren’t the favorites, but even major films like The Secret Agent and Bugonia—both critically acclaimed and in the running for major categories—were ultimately completely snubbed.
