Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen brings to Netflix the dark atmosphere so dear to the producers, the Duffer brothers: here there is no Upside Down, but something truly terrible is lurking, ready to ruin the happiest day of the protagonists’ lives.
In keeping with Netflix’s horror genre, we find that claustrophobic and oppressive atmosphere characteristic of Mike Flanagan’s series… . and even a cameo familiar to the audience. Rachel, the protagonist, is overcome by a deep unease as soon as she arrives at the luxurious mountain cabin where, in a few days, she will marry her fiancé Nicky. The estate is owned by her future husband’s family, whom Rachel is meeting for the first time: relations seem hostile at first, the atmosphere is heavy, and a dark premonition gives the young woman no peace. Making matters worse is the legend of a serial killer ice cream man, a mysterious man, and the presence of a spirit, “The Grieving Man,” who seems to threaten anyone who ventures into the woods.
Rachel’s past is troubled: her mother died when she was seven months old, and her relationship with her father is turbulent. These traumas seem to resurface just a few days before the wedding. But the protagonist’s intuition is right: in the middle of the night, Rachel is kidnapped by her father and forced to watch a disturbing video on an old VHS tape. Those images depict her parents’ trip to the very same mountain location where the girl now finds herself: in a cabin not far away, her mother and father had planned to get married. And so we finally see the face of Alexandra Harkin, Rachel’s mother: the audience will be speechless upon recognizing actress Vittoria Pedretti!
The ultimate scream queen couldn’t miss out on the Netflix horror series: after The Haunting of Hill House, Bly Manor, and You, the actress certainly isn’t afraid of a little blood. Especially since something truly terrible happened to Alexandra Harkin… but everything is explained in the finale of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen. The Netflix star’s cameo thrilled horror fans, and now one question is inevitable: will Rachel’s future, curse, or past be explored in a second season of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen?
