Just a few hours after the season 2 finale of Daredevil: Born Again aired, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe already have a new date to circle on their calendars, as the new The Punisher: One Last Kill special film will premiere exclusively on Disney+ next week. Dario Scardapane, showrunner for the first, second, and third seasons of Daredevil: Born Again (the third is currently in production), has finally confirmed where The Punisher: One Last Kill fits into the MCU timeline.
“I don’t know much about what happens in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but I know exactly where we left him at the end of the second season of The Punisher,” Scardapane told Variety. The writer, as you may know, was the showrunner for the original Netflix series Marvel’s The Punisher, and he reintroduced Frank Castle to the MCU during the first season of Daredevil: Born Again. “I can say that this special film takes place after The Punisher and before and during the events of the second season of Resurrection.”
Some fans were quite disappointed by Frank Castle’s absence from the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, but there were two good reasons for this: 1) this special and 2) the fact that the character will play a major role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a project that will mark the big-screen debut of Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle. Sacrificing his return in Daredevil: Born Again 2, therefore, was definitely worth it!
From Scardapane’s comments, however, we can infer that whatever happened during the events of Daredevil: Born Again 2 will likely explain how Frank ends up getting involved with Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The official synopsis of the Marvel Special film, though cryptic, is as follows: “Frank Castle tries to live a life free of vengeance, but is dragged into an unexpected conflict.” Perhaps the film, written by Jon Bernthal himself, will tie together the series Marvel’s The Punisher, Daredevil: Born Again, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, while also expanding the mythology of Frank Castle? We’ll find out in a few days…
The cast includes Jason R. Moore as Curtis Hoyle (reprising his role from the Netflix series The Punisher), Roe Rancell as Dennis, and Mila Jaymes as Charli. The Punisher: One Last Kill arrives on Disney+ on May 12, exclusively for subscribers. As a reminder, Jon Bernthal made a surprise return this week on Disney+ thanks to the new special episode of The Bear, a flashback spin-off episode titled ‘Gary’ centered on his character, Mike Berzatto, which serves as a bridge between the fourth and fifth (and final) seasons of the main series.
The star will also be seen this summer in Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey (July 16) and Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 29), in which he will, of course, reprise his role as the Punisher.
