The highly anticipated live-action remake of Moana, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Maui, has returned with a new official trailer ahead of its worldwide theatrical release on August 19.
In the new promotional video, which as always you can find in the player within the article, Disney has unveiled the first images of Dwayne Johnson as Maui in the live-action remake of “Moana”: As you may know, The Rock voiced the demigod in the original 2016 animated film, which follows the adventures of a teenager named Moana on a mission to save her village on the island of Motunui. Newcomer Catherine Laga’aia stars as the lead in the upcoming live-action film, while Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in both the 2016 original and the 2024 sequel, returns as an executive producer alongside director Thomas Kail, Scott Sheldon, and Charles Newirth.
The producers also include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Beau Flynn (for FlynnPictureCo), Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia (through their production company Seven Bucks Productions, founded by The Rock), and Lin-Manuel Miranda. In addition to Catherine Laga’aia and Dwayne Johnson, the cast of the live-action film includes John Tui as Moana’s father, Chief Tui; Frankie Adams as Moana’s mother, Sina; and Rena Owen as Moana’s grandmother, Tala. The screenplay is written by Dana Ledoux Miller and Jared Bush, who also wrote the screenplay for the 2016 film “Moana.” The music for the live-action adaptation is by Mark Mancina, Miranda, and Opetaia Foa’i; Mancina has returned to compose the film’s soundtrack.
The 2016 animated film was a critical and commercial success, grossing $643 million at the global box office (figure not adjusted for inflation). The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, and Miranda received a nomination for the original song “How Far I’ll Go”. The big hit, however, came more recently with Moana 2, which grossed over $1 billion and became one of the most successful animated films of all time.
The live-action film “Moana” will hit U.S. theaters on July 10, while in Italy it will arrive on August 19.
