The finale of Young Sherlock wraps up many of the season’s main storylines, revealing the darkest secrets of the Holmes family and setting the stage for possible future developments. Above all, the final episode reveals the true nature of Silas Holmes, father of Sherlock and Mycroft.
Silas is revealed to be involved in international chemical weapons trafficking. Years before the events of the series, he had his wife Cordelia committed to an asylum to prevent her from dividing their assets and leaving him penniless. At the same time, he had come into contact with a secret project at Oxford University: the creation of a powerful nerve agent tested on a Chinese village. The program had been funded by the British government and led by Bucephalus Hodge, but the scientist who had developed the weapon, Professor Malick, had betrayed and killed him in order to sell it to the highest bidder. The buyer was Silas himself, who planned to resell it first to the British government and then, secretly, to other interested nations.
In the finale, the situation comes to a head when Shou’an destroys Silas’ nerve agent supply with an explosion. Afterwards, she, Sherlock, and Beatrice manage to track him down. Beatrice and Shou’an want revenge and to kill him, but Sherlock insists that he be handed over to British justice. Wounded by a gunshot and with no way out, Silas embraces his son and throws himself off a cliff, choosing suicide. The series also reveals the truth about Beatrice. Silas had faked her death when she was a child to drive his wife Cordelia mad with grief and thus gain total control of the family finances.
Raised by an adoptive family, Beatrice later returned to her father’s life, who tried to manipulate her by telling her that her mother was violent and unstable. Only later does Cordelia manage to convince her of the truth, leading her to turn against him. However, the ending leaves several mysteries unresolved. Sherlock deciphers a code left by his father that leads him to a mysterious key. Despite his brother Mycroft urging him to let it go, Sherlock decides to keep it a secret. Meanwhile, he discovers that Moriarty is in contact with Beatrice: an alliance that is likely to further complicate the young detective’s future. Meanwhile, we are also trying to figure out if Young Sherlock is a prequel to the films starring Robert Downey Jr.
