Star Wars: Starfighter is one of the most anticipated films in the saga, introducing Gosling’s mysterious character for the first time, a pilot ready to enter a wider world. Star Wars: Starfighter, the new film in the saga scheduled for release in 2027, promises to take the saga into uncharted creative territory. According to one of the stars involved in the project, the film, which will star Ryan Gosling, will have a “punk” soul, with a more daring and rebellious tone than recent chapters of the franchise created by George Lucas.
The new Star Wars will be “punk”: what we know about the tone of the film
In an interview with ScreenRant, Daniel Ings spoke about the surreal experience of working on a Star Wars film: “I met Shawn Levy, the director, to audition for the part, and he’s an inherently playful person who clearly creates an environment where people can interact with each other and find things in the moment.” The tone will therefore be very lighthearted, which was a relief for the star, who was able to shake off the weight that the saga carries with it: “Any nervousness about stepping into something as established, beloved, and big as Star Wars vanished because I got there and thought, ‘Oh, this is fun and playful.’”
Ings added: “It was Star Wars through and through. There were days when I would walk around and see droids rolling around, animatronic heads, and hundreds of people in incredible costumes, but with a punk twist. I loved it and felt great.”
What is the plot of Star Wars: Starfighter?
Although the details of the story have not yet been revealed, the film will be a completely new adventure with new characters, not directly linked to the previous trilogies and without the return of the saga’s historical protagonists. The story will be set about five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (released in 2019), at the most advanced point in the saga’s cinematic timeline, which will return to theaters this year after a six-year wait.
All the upcoming Star Wars films
After several years away from the big screen, the Star Wars saga is preparing to return to cinemas with a new phase of films set in different eras of the galaxy. The first title scheduled is Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, due for release on May 20. After that, we will have to wait until May 2027 for Star Wars: Starfighter.
Another highly anticipated project is the film that will mark the return of Rey Skywalker, played by Daisy Ridley. Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the feature film is expected to be set about fifteen years after the end of the sequel trilogy and follow Rey as she attempts to found a new Jedi Order. Finally, there is also James Mangold’s film, titled Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, and Simon Kinberg’s new trilogy.
