The premiere of the first season of Scrubs, or rather, its revival, immediately showed a sensational twist. To understand it, however, we need to do a little bit of detective work, digging up what happened in the finale of the eighth season of the comedy series about doctors. Well, in the controversial epilogue of Scrubs, we see JD imagining his future life as if it were a movie, with him in a relationship with Elliot, whom he married and had a child with. In short, the classic “happily ever after” that had us hoping for the best. But with the revival came a cold shower: not only did JD and Elliot never have a child, but they are now separated and on very bad terms.
At least for now, the reason why the two have separated remains a mystery, but given the shock of viewers, it seems unnecessary to look for clues. Overall, the Scrubs revival has been well received by audiences and critics alike, eager to throw themselves back into the comical and exciting dynamics of the “doctors in training.” Regarding JD and Elliot, creator Bill Lawrence admitted that it was an “important decision” made together with showrunner Aseem Batra. And given the impact it had on the audience… we can only agree with him.
“It was funny because Aseem and I discussed it… It was a big decision. But at the end of season eight, what I thought was: things didn’t go exactly how I wanted them to. When you look back at the series, if you watch every episode with Turk and Carla, you think, ‘Those two are going to make it. And if you think back to JD and Elliott, those two never made it past an episode and a half without being a horrible couple…’. Indeed, the romantic journey of the couple in Scrubs was tumultuous, to say the least, and their sad ending is an acceptable reality.
