Production of the new live-action Scooby-Doo TV series coming to the Netflix on-demand streaming platform is finally underway, and the first actress chosen for one of the leading roles has just been announced.
Last year, we learned that a new live-action Scooby-Doo series would be officially produced by Netflix, with Josh Appelbaum (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) and Scott Rosenberg (Venom, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) on board as writers and showrunners. Nexus Point News then reported that Frank Welker, who has played both Fred Jones and Scooby-Doo for over fifty years, will once again lend his voice to the iconic Great Dane protagonist of the title saga, although the news has yet to be officially confirmed.
However, we now know that Mckenna Grace (Scream 7, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) has joined the cast as Daphne Blake, as confirmed by The Wrap. It should be noted that this will not be the young actress’s first time in the world of Scooby-Doo, nor specifically in the role of Daphne, as she previously voiced the younger version of Daphne in the 2020 animated film Scooby! (she also cosplayed the character in 2024, as can be seen on her Instagram profile).
Filming is scheduled to begin in April in Atlanta, so new updates about the cast are sure to emerge in the coming weeks. The eight-episode series will focus on the origins of the Mystery Inc. gang, Shaggy, Velma, Daphne, and Freddy, and their first encounter with the adorable Great Dane of the title, who enters their lives after witnessing a supernatural murder. The official synopsis reads: “During their last summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne find themselves involved in a disturbing mystery surrounding a lost Great Dane puppy who may have been the only witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic Velma and the strange but always charming Freddy, the group sets out to solve the case that threatens to become a nightmare capable of revealing all their secrets.”
We don’t know what to expect in terms of tone, but the series has previously been described as an “hour-long drama” similar to The CW’s Riverdale, but it remains to be seen whether a more serious version of Scooby-Doo will appeal to fans. André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner will serve as executive producers through their Midnight Radio, alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman through Berlanti Productions.
Over the years, in addition to the original Hanna-Barbera cartoon, there have been several Scooby-Doo projects, and the series was previously adapted into live-action for the big screen in the 2002 film starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini, and its 2004 sequel, Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed.
