When KPOP Demon Hunters debuted on Netflix, no one would have expected that the animated film about three idol demon hunters would conquer all the platform’s top 10 lists, win awards, and climb to the top of the music charts. In no time at all, KPOP Demon Hunters became a global phenomenon. Such success could only be consolidated with a sequel. Netflix will produce a second film, but according to the latest updates, it will take longer than expected to see KPOP Demon Hunters 2. However, while we wait, we can perhaps enjoy a little preview of the plot of the second chapter of the saga.
KPop Demon Hunters producer Michelle Wong spoke to The Direct about the sequel, suggesting that the audience could delve deeper into the past of the Huntrix members: “I’d love to explore Mira and Zoey’s backgrounds and where they come from. Or even Derpy. Talk more about the relationship between Derpy and Sussie.” In Golden, we got a brief glimpse into Mira and Zoey’s past: while Mira has a turbulent relationship with her family, acting as the rebel of the group, Zoey seems to have struggled with her future during her time in the United States. The first film basically makes Rumi the protagonist, because of her unmentionable secret. Now, there is more room in the narrative to delve into the demons of the two idols’ past.
The idea of keeping the focus on Derpy and Sussie is also interesting: the two demons, one a tiger and the other a magpie, accompanied Jinu on his mission but played an active role in the events, quickly becoming iconic figures for fans of the film. Not to mention a certain scene, which seems set to be very important for the sequel to KPOP Demon Hunters. Only Netflix can answer all our questions, but at the moment, the priority is elsewhere. The Oscar race is frenetic, and KPOP Demon Hunters boasts two nominations: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Golden.
