James Cameron, who has earned himself the reputation of absolute king of the box office thanks to decades of blockbuster hits, recently spoke out about the deal between Netflix and Warner Bros. For the Oscar-winning director and blockbuster author, “Warner’s proposal to sell to Netflix will be a disaster for the industry.”
This blunt assessment comes from a director who is so wealthy and successful that he has no fear of speaking his mind. “Mr. Sarandos is a good person, a skilled business leader and innovator, but his company’s goals are in stark contrast to the health of the film market,” said the director of Terminator, Aliens, Titanic, and Avatar. In his letter dated February 10, 2026, addressed to Senator Mike Lee, Cameron opened up about the issue.
Cameron never mentioned Paramount, nor his attempt to block Netflix’s $83 billion bid for WB. Instead, the focus was on the likely job losses and trade deficits that the deal will produce. “If these films are no longer given the green light due to further market contraction, a phenomenon that Netflix’s acquisition of Warner Brothers will certainly accelerate, many jobs will be lost. Cinemas will close. Fewer films will be produced. Service providers such as visual effects companies will close. Job losses will skyrocket.”
This is a thesis that is openly opposed to the agreement between the parties, further emphasizing the ideas of the most famous filmmaker on the planet. Meanwhile, things for Avatar: The Way of Water do not seem to have gone as well as hoped. The third installment of Cameron’s sci-fi saga has suffered a sharp drop at the box office!
