Engines are revving up: Oscar nominations are in, but there’s also a sequel in the future of F1: The Movie. And Lewis Hamilton, one of the film’s producers, wants to raise the stakes. The awards and box office receipts that make F1 the highest-grossing original film of 2025 weren’t enough.
The British champion is thinking big, and the latest updates on the F1 sequel see Apple Studios providing strong support for Hamilton’s ambitions. So, what’s in the works? The seven-time Formula 1 world champion has confirmed that he is working with director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer on the first draft of the script. There are many ideas: the discussion with screenwriter Ehren Kruger was long but valuable in gathering ideas.
The goal is clear from the champion’s words at the press conference: “I know what we could do better,” Hamilton told FullThrottleHQ, “and it was incredible to see how much impact it had, how many people loved the film. I still get messages from people who are still watching the film and telling me how much it opened their eyes to the sport.” At the time of its debut, F1 could not avoid some criticism: for a portion of fans, the portrayal of Formula One was unrealistic, taking excessive liberties in addressing certain aspects of the sport on the big screen.
“The second film is always important. Sequels are not always great, but we have a great team, a great cast, great writers,” Hamilton continued, “so I’m not worried, but we’ll take our time and make sure we get the result we want.” It may take a while to see an F1 sequel: fitting the project into the director’s busy schedule, Hamilton’s sporting commitments, and Brad Pitt’s film commitments will not be easy.
