The huge success of K-pop Demon Hunters made it unthinkable that Netflix‘s most-watched movie of all time would not have a sequel. In fact, the project was announced months ago with the intention of being ready by 2029, but it has been on hold since then for good reason. Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville, top executives at Sony Animation, told The Hollywood Reporter that Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, directors of K-Pop Demon Hunters, have not yet been able to move forward with the sequel. The reason? All the awards they are receiving for the first film: “There’s a lot to deal with in terms of the awards campaign.”
For after 2029
However, they also emphasize that “after all the excitement, the awards, and the big parties with important people, yes, we’ll be in the same room again.” But the truly significant consequence is that this is having another consequence, as Belson confirmed that the idea of having K-Pop Demon Hunters 2 ready by 2029 seems highly unlikely. However, they also didn’t forget that things take time to be done well and that, at the time, it seemed impossible to surpass Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and then, a few years later, they dazzled us with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The plan with K-Pop Demon Hunters 2 is to achieve something similar.
It’s like Spider-Verse. The universe is so rich: the world of demons and pop stars. What happened to Jinu? There is so much we could explore.
So we’ll have to be patient, although at the current rate, K-Pop Demon Hunters could easily remain in Netflix’s weekly top 10 until then, having been there for 9 consecutive months, and promises to cause a stir at the 2026 Oscars.
What is the plot of the first film?
In K-Pop Demon Hunters, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey form a hugely successful girl group, the female trio called HUNTR/X. However, between performances in packed stadiums and life in the spotlight, the three protect the world from dark creatures through music. Descendants of a dynasty of demon hunters, they balance their lives as pop stars with this secret identity, facing impossible missions. A new challenge, however, arises for Rumi, Mira, and Zoey when a new rival K-Pop group, mysteriously formed by male demons, decides to organize a plan to steal all the heroines’ fans. The trio will need to use all their secret powers and musical talents to fight the new villains.
