This week, Crunchyroll shared a video clip from the anime Tongari Boushi no Atelier, also known as Witch Hat Atelier or Atelier of Witch Hat, which corresponds to Episode 1. It will air at 11:00 p.m. JST on April 6, 2026, which would be 8:00 a.m. on the same day in Central Mexico time. However, it is not yet known at what time it will be available on this video-on-demand service. Perhaps a little earlier. The company behind this platform has sought a way to make the episodes of its exclusive series available half an hour or even an hour before they debut on Japanese television.
Now, with regard to what can be seen in the video, it is precisely the beginning of the story. This is when the most important characters are introduced. They are Coco, played by actress Rena Motomura, and Qifrey, voiced by actor Natsuki Hanae. Without giving too much away about Episode 1 of the anime Tongari Boushi no Atelier/Atelier of Witch Hat, this is the first time the master and apprentice will meet. His duty will be to instruct her in the ways of magic. Despite the name of the series, which alludes to witchcraft, the magical science that appears has little to do with this practice. At least not with the traditional conception that exists, since it is a system of its own.
If BUG FILMS, the studio in charge, sticks to what Kamome Shirahama created, its basic functioning will be addressed at the beginning of the story. The trailer highlights the care taken in the design of the characters and settings, as well as the animation. As I mentioned before, the studio is betting its future on this animated adaptation. It cannot make the same mistakes it made with Zom 100: Zombie ni Naru made ni Shitai 100 no Koto. Episode 1 of the anime Tongari Boushi no Atelier/Atelier of Witch Hat is extremely important in cementing its success.
It is worth noting that the manga is well worth reading, and so far 15 compilation volumes have been published. The most recent one went on sale on November 21 last year. It is one of the series handled by the Kodansha publishing house, which also has a keen interest in ensuring that its animation receives the best possible reception. But we’ll only see that when it premieres, which is not far off. Let’s see what else is revealed about the anime before it becomes available, and in the meantime, enjoy the preview.
