In addition to examining the main differences between A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and The Hedge Knight, George RR Martin’s original story on which the HBO prequel series to Game of Thrones is based, in this article we want to give you the first previews of the second season. Without spoiling the ending of the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will be released next Monday exclusively on the HBO Max on-demand streaming platform, showrunner Ira Parker, author of the series, said in a new interview that production of the second season is well underway and that he will adapt the second Dunk and Egg story, which happens to be his favorite of the three published so far.
“We’re now working on The Sworn Sword, which is my favorite story in many ways, with Rohanne Webber or the Red Widow, Ser Bennis, and Ser Eustace, who are classic characters,” Parker told The A.V. Club. “I can’t say much, but we have three absolutely brilliant actors who will be joining these roles. I’m excited. We’re editing some scenes together now, and the directors are shooting others, so it’s nice to see the second season gradually taking shape. The release of the series at the same time as the development of our work has been a blessing in many ways. It allows you to do what Dunk does, putting one foot in front of the other to focus on the work instead of just reacting.”
The first season adapted the events of The Hedge Knight, the first Dunk and Egg novella written by George RR Martin. The Sworn Sword is set a year and a half after The Hedge Knight and sees Dunk and Egg in Standfast, a tower in the Reach. Dunk has pledged his sword to Ser Eustace Osgrey of Standfast and finds himself caught in the middle of a conflict between Lady Rohanne and Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield.
Remember that HBO renewed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in November 2025, about two months before the series debuted. With the final episode airing next week, we can (hopefully) expect an official announcement for the third season very soon, which in turn will adapt the third and final novella in the saga. In addition, Ira Parker has revealed that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could last 10-12 seasons: this is because Martin, co-author of the series, has shared with the showrunner many unpublished stories about Dunk and Egg covering the entire lives of the two protagonists with the aim of creating new episodes…
